Finding Pregnancy Related Support

01.

Prenatal & Labor Support

Also called,”A Birth Doula,” I am an experienced, certified, and insured doula. My role in your pregnancy journey is to offer education, resources, and companionship throughout your prenatal period. Doulas work in any hospital, birth center or home birth center, and I am not exception to that provided you remain under the care of a provider. If you decide to do a free birth, I would be happy to explore other options for doulas with you.

02.

Bereavement or Infant Loss

As a doula who is trained and certified to support families who are having, or anticipate having, a loss or serious outcome in their pregnancy journey, I help families focus first on the baby’s birth, and then on the grieving or passing as a separate event.

If you are experiencing miscarriage, you may find it helpful to understand the emotions associated with the loss are extremely varied.  This article may be helpful to you.

Pregnancy loss or stillbirth affects 1 in 175 births, about 21,000 babies according to the CDC. If you are one of those families, please find doula support.

03.

Postpartum Care for the Family

This is where I personally feel your resources are best allocated,  if your budget is tight and you must choose between a birth doula and postpartum support. My role in the home of a family who has just given birth or brought home a new baby, is to handle ordinary tasks in the home while imparting newborn care skills and emotional companionship.

During the first 6 weeks, “the traditional postpartum period,” recovery, adjustment, and reassurance are most valuable. This article by Healthline talks about the role and the benefits.

Postpartum care is an hourly service for your family, it is not the same as as nanny or a night nurse.

04.

Certified Lactation Counseling

As a CLC, I am a strong advocate for breastfeeding education and support. This is not a position of judgement, it is a professional certification from ALPP and the Healthy Children’s Project that has proven the health benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby.

When you decide to breastfeed, you reduce the likelihood that you will develop various cancers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. Your baby will be less likely to be affected by SIDS, and have a healthier relationship with food.

Feeding baby is PRIORITY ONE! If you want help breastfeeding, bottle feeding, safely preparing formula, santiziing equipment, or weaning, a CLC can support you.

How I Excel in Support

— 01

Virtual Support

Someone tells you something that you want to talk about, perhaps your provider wants you to do something and you want more information, or if you are feeling a little anxious. Virtual support is like a friend who has deep knowledge about pregnancy and birth. Call or text someone like that, rather than someone who is guessing.

Resources

My clients share personal experience in real time. This collective sharing that is first-hand is much  more reliable than sifting through commentary on social media by people who have corporate alignment, or a “misery loves company” disposition.

I continue to educate myself through reading, webinars, and doula meet-ups. This support and investment is for the benefit of my clients.

Food & Flexibility

We all have a love language, mine is food and cooking. While this role is not necessarily a part of every doula’s support, it is part of mine. My long term plan is to offer postpartum families portioned meals that are easy, homemade, and comforting. I provide this service to my clients about 2-4 times per week, without charge.
If you want recipes prepared, you can order groceries in advance of my arrival, and we will get cooking!

Flexibility – I have adult children, so my availability is pretty wide. Unless I have a birth, I support nights, early mornings, occasionally weekends. Babies definetly do not come with clocks or calendards.

Birth memories are strongly imprinted on us. Make choices today that, in the moment, as well as in reflection, make you feel your power.

My Doula Style

Offering Education, Support, and Relief With Empathy, but Without Judgement .

When I am with clients, it’s important for me to meet you where you are in terms of needs and goals. I approach our relationship with the understanding that these milestone events are your life experiences. Over the course of your pregnancy, we will get to know each other very well, and you will be able to count on me when the big day arrives.

The key to a successful doula/client relationship is communication. Because a doula is present to serve clients needs, it’s natural and expected for you to vocalize those without fear. If you feel comfortable to share, you have a good doula.

Happy Clients

I am fortunate to have many!

If you have had a baby, you can imagine how hard it is to ask parents for feedback or reviews.

Reviews on Google tell part of my story.

Many of my clients do send lovely, heartwarming notes, so I have shared some of those!

Dear Judy,
Sending a note of thanks...for the amazing support, guidance, and friendship over the past couple of months. We couldn't be more grateful that we found you and the timing aligned for us to work together.
You made H----'s birth an even more special experience - one where both Adam and I felt empowered, and one that was a true team effort....
Look forward to keeping in touch as H--- grows up...and potentially for #2!!?... Love, S., A., & H.
